Ignite groups are small faith communities which meet weekly on and off campus. After reading the upcoming Sunday’s Gospel, we discuss, reflect on and apply the Word of God to our daily lives. Ignite provides a medium for people of all levels of faith to find support, challenge themselves, and bring one another closer to Christ.

May I join an Ignite group partway through the semester?
Of course! Anyone is welcome at any time, and newcomers are always appreciated. Discussion is based on the upcoming Sunday’s Gospel, so each week is a new experience.
Do I have to be Catholic to attend Ignite?
Of course not! The beauty of the Gospels is that they speak to everyone across time. We’d love to hear your interpretation of God’s Word.
If I cannot make it to the Ignite in my dorm, may I attend another group?
Of course! Ignites meet at varying times and locations in order for everyone to attend the group which best fits his or her schedule and circumstances.
What is the structure of a typical Ignite?
Every meeting starts with prayer and the reading of the upcoming Sunday’s Gospel. The leader(s) will facilitate the discussion with questions based on the reading. At the end of the hour, the meeting closes with prayer and fellowship.

How I got involved at St. Tom’s: I was heavily involved in my high school’s youth group, and wanted to continue that in college. I started by going to the Ignite group that met in Shreve, and realized these were the people I wanted to be around. I went on the New Student Overnighter, came to Sunday Night Dinners, and attended Boiler Awakening fall of my freshman year. I got roped in to the many wonderful ministries and people St. Tom’s has, and haven’t looked back since.
Favorite Bible Verse: Mark 1:7 “And this is what he proclaimed: ‘One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.'”
Fun Fact: I have 3 screws in my right leg and I set off airport metal detectors.
Bio: I was raised as a cradle Catholic in Cincinnati, Ohio and moved to Cleveland (the best city to ever exist even though Lebron left) when I was 13. I did gymnastics for 15 years, and was very involved in my parish’s Lifeteen program, where I learned about Catholicism and what makes it so unique. I came to Purdue and began to intentionally live my faith. God carries me through the ups and downs of every day, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the people in my life He has blessed me with. Also I’m in love with coffee, elite gymnastics, and crocheting, so if you ever want to talk about those things (or quite literally anything else), I’d love to chat!

How I got involved at St. Tom’s: I wasn’t terribly involved at St Tom’s my freshman year. I started attending daily mass as frequently as I could as part of my Lenten practice second semester of that year, but that was about the extent of my involvement. In the fall of my sophomore year, one of the leaders of Purdue Catholic Men introduced himself to me and invited me to come to some of their events. I started attending these events and began to make some more friends at St Toms. In the spring, I got involved with an Ignite group and fell in love with St Toms and the Christ-centered friendships I was developing. I now spend about 80% of my time on campus at St Toms, whether it’s attending daily mass, adoration, or pretending to study in the basement where I’m usually found to be distracting others and myself from schoolwork.
Favorite Bible Verse: Luke 23:42-43, Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ Jesus answered him, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.’
Bio: I am from South Bend, IN (technically Mishawaka, but most people have never heard of Mishawaka, so I found it easier to say South Bend). I have five older siblings and five nieces and nephews (so far). I have always been Catholic and I always said it was something very important to my identity, but my actions (or lack thereof) were speaking louder than those words. I was what I like to call a “drive-through Catholic”. It wasn’t until my sophomore year of college that I really started to take ownership and responsibility of my faith, in large part to the community and anchorage I found at St Toms. Fun facts: Big Notre Dame football guy, love country music, and in eighth grade my basketball coach motivated me to get more rebounds by offering to buy me steak. I got 19 rebounds that game despite averaging about 5 in every other game.

How I got involved at St. Tom’s: At the beginning of my freshman year, a friend invited me to come to the Windsor Ignite. I quickly became friends with that group of amazing girls, and our weekly meetings and long chats became the highlight of my week! That Ignite group really made me feel like home, and it opened me up to many other opportunities at St. Toms like Boiler Awakening, adoration, and more! I am so grateful for all the amazing friends I’ve met through St. Toms!
Favorite Bible Verse: John 13:1 – “He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end.”
Fun Fact: I have a twin brother!
Bio: I grew up in Westfield, Indiana and spent most of my time playing sports, specifically, basketball and lacrosse. I attended Guerin Catholic High School, and I was so blessed to be a part of a community that encouraged me to dive deeper into my faith. I’m currently a junior at Purdue, and in addition to being an Ignite Coordinator, I’m in Delta Sigma Pi, a professional business fraternity. After I graduate, I hope to work for a non-profit doing marketing and development. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about St. Toms, Purdue, or if you’d just like to chat!

How I got involved at St. Tom’s: I went on Boiler Awakening 17, then joined an Ignite group.
Favorite Bible Verse: Job 9:4 – “God is wise in heart and mighty in strength;
who has withstood him and remained whole?”
Bio: I was raised Christian in beautiful Tulsa, Oklahoma. I enjoy long runs, reading, making and listening to music, and, most of all, living out a Catholic life alongside my friends at St. Tom’s. I became Catholic my senior year of high school, and I haven’t looked back. Ignite has been one of the most important parts of my faith formation during my time at Purdue, and I know it can – and will – become an important part of yours also.

How I got involved at St. Tom’s: My first week of Freshman year, I decided to hang around St. Tom’s until I heard about what was happening within the BoilerCatholics community. I ended up meeting a lot of people at Wednesday Night Mass and Sunday Night Dinner, who encouraged me to try a few ministries. I have since been involved in many different ministries and continue to consider St. Tom’s a second home on campus.
Favorite Bible Verse: “Do not be saddened this day, for rejoicing in the Lord is your strength!” Nehemiah 8:10
Fun Fact: I’ve never purchased a haircut, and have given several for free (100% satisfaction rate!)
Bio: I grew up in a small town in the Southeast corner of Indiana, where I first learned about the importance of faith and a good community through my family’s incredible example. I grew up loving sports, music and spontaneous adventures and can still be found enjoying one of these three hobbies during most of my free time. I’m incredibly extroverted (most of the time) and am always interested in learning new things about the world around me and the people in it, which is probably why I am so intrigued by science. Most importantly, I am a Catholic in love with Christ, with a desire to share the joy and peace of the gospel with the world.

How I got involved at St. Tom’s: Early in my freshman year I was invited to play Intramural soccer by Caleb Moster. I saw the lively community outside the walls of the church and was drawn more deeply to what was inside! I made some friends by showing up to Ignite, playing PCS intramurals, and at Sunday Night Dinner and POOF! I was involved.
Favorite Bible Verse: “No… I am your father” ….ohh wait… Matthew 18:3 “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven”
Bio: Who am I? That’s a great question.
Alternate bio in case you want a real one: Born and raised in good old Indiana. I have a strong passion for everything this is corn. Some of my hobbies include corn shucking, corn roasting, and corn bobbing(like apple bobbing but better). My favorite foods are corn bread, corn on the cob, corn dip, canned corn, corn flakes, corn chips, corn tortillas, pop corn, and corn fritters. I like dad jokes but some people think they’re corny. But in all seriousness, If you ever would like to chat about anything I’ll be all ears.

How I got involved at St. Toms: Towards the end of senior year in high school, I felt a longing for a deeper relationship with Christ and His followers. I knew I needed to jump right in when I came to Purdue. I went on NSO, loved it, but then didn’t come back for awhile. It wasn’t until Boiler Awakening 17 that it was clear to me that I needed to be here and around these people. I started going to Ignite (shoutout Megan G), Exalt, PCW, Women and Discernment, and anything else I could do to be here as much as possible and find those Christ-pursuing friends that I so deeply desired. I’m still hanging around, so so far so good.
Favorite Bible Verse: Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus”
Fun Fact: I was baptized with Maryanne
Bio: I’m a townie!! I was born and raised right across the river in Lafayette. I’m a cradle Catholic and went to Catholic schools growing up (which you can see in person if you go on BA). I like long walks on the beach, sunrises and sunsets, reading, drinking coffee, and reading while drinking coffee on the beach during sunrise. When I’m not at Ignite, I’m probably anywhere else in the church doing homework, praying, or hanging out with friends, old and new! Come hang!

How I got involved at St. Toms: Second semester of my freshman year I knew I wanted to be involved at St. Tom’s but I had no idea how to do this. I went to Grant Freeman and asked him what to do. He told me about Ignite and about one group in particular he thought would be a good fit for me. A couple hours later I got a text from the leader of that group inviting me to join them and that got the ball rolling. The lovely people at St. Tom’s haven’t been able to get rid of me since.
Favorite Bible Verse: Romans 12:12 “Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer.”
Fun Fact: I was baptized with Grace Anne.
Bio: I was born and raised in Lafayette. I come from the kind of home that is never quiet. Ever. Across the river, in a cute little house, lives my wonderful parents, grandpa, my three younger sisters, two dogs, and a cat (whose name is Herman but is actually a girl). My family is such a big part of who I am, they are the people who rooted me in Catholicism. Growing up, I loved long distance running, drawing & painting, and showing my cows at the fair. If you’re ever looking for me, I’ll be in the basement of St. Tom’s probably napping.
